Types of Phrases
Prepositional Phrases- a group words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or as pronoun, which is called the object of the prepositon.
ex. The new picture hangs on the wall

Appositive Phrases- a noun or a that is placed next to another noun or pronoun to identify it or give additional information about it. An appositive phrase is the appositive plus any words that modify the appositive.
ex. My friend Jodi works at the hospital

Verbals- a verbal is a verb from that functions in a sentence as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. Verbals LOOK like verbs, but they function as either a N/ADJ/ADV
There are 3 types of verbals --- Participles, Gerunds, and Infinitives.
A Participle is a verb form that can function as an adjective. Participles often end in -ing or -ed , but some are irregularly formed.
Ex. The baseball team is on a losing steak.

Participle Phrase- contains a participle plus any complements and modifiers. Participle phrases can be placed in various position in a sentence bu they always act as adjectives.
Ex. The full moon, suspended in the sky , was brilliant

Gerunds- a verb form that ends in -ing and functions in the same way a noun functions.
Ex. Training is essential.

Infinitives- a verb form that is usually preceded by the word to and is used as a noun, an adjective, or a an adverb. The verb form is always the base form of a verb.
Ex. To volunteer is rewarding
